IF YOU HAVE ANY FURTER QUERIES ABOUT HOW TO DISPOSE OF ANY TYPE OF WASTE THEN PLEASE ASK!

Radioactive Isotope Waste

Radioactive waste is removed on the third Thursday of every month by an external contractor; users need to ensure the following when disposing of radioactive waste:

• Sharps must be disposed of into sharps containers and these containers placed into the white plastic pails provided. Alternatively dispose of sharps directly into the white plastic pails.

- Ensure the lid is secure!

•  Wet waste eg, tubes containing scintillant etc, are disposed of in the white plastic pails

- Ensure the lid is secure!

•  Dry waste e.g. tissues, bench-coat, paper towel, gloves, swabs and pipette tips are disposed of into the brown paper "wet waste" bags provided.

•  All Radioactive Waste is labelled with a Radioactive Waste Sticker. This must have the isotope, level of radiation; lab group, Department code (536).

•  Full pails and bags are to be placed in Room N107.

•  Ensure the logbook in N107 is completed for every item of waste .

• Do NOT place radioactive sources into waste packaging

Under no circumstances are SHARPS (needles etc.) to be disposed of into the plastic lined paper "wet waste" bags for Radioactive Isotope Waste.

Bio-Hazard Waste

SHARPS

Sharps are removed on the third Thursday of every month by an external contractor; users need to ensure the following when disposing of sharp waste:

•  Sharps containers are used

•  Sharps containers are used only for sharps waste (ie. not pipette tips, gloves and tissues etc.)

•  Lab group, Dept. code (536) and weight are clearly marked - Scales are available in N107

•  Full sharps containers are placed in Room N107

•  Ensure the lid is secure!

•  Ensure the ledger book in N107 is filled out

Other Bio-Hazard Waste is collected every Friday Morning by an external contractor

•  Use yellow Bio-Hazard Bags

•  Place in the freezers in the Basement

•  Ensure the bag is labelled with your lab group

•  Complete the logbook attached to the freezer

Under NO circumstances are SHARPS to be put in these bags

Hazardous Chemical Waste

Hazardous Chemical waste is removed on the third Thursday of every month by an external contractor; users need to ensure the following when disposing of this waste

•  All hazardous liquid chemical waste should be put in chemical grade plastic carboys available from the Chemistry store (avoid using glass and never use "Jam" jars etc.

•  Flammable Waste is to be stored in the Flammable liquid Bunker in the basement

•  Other chemical waste should be put in room N107

•  All waste should be clearly labelled with contents, lab group, and Dept. code (536)

•  Unwanted Hazardous Chemical

If labs have chemicals they no longer require, they should first forward a list to Chris Bramich for advice as chemical collection only occurs once or twice a year.

Please do NOT put empty bottles and containers in either of the stores, these should be disposed of via normal waste means once they have been cleaned and the labels removed.
