Ph.D. Project.
A Ph.D. project is available within the group. Preference will be given to a student with postgraduate funding but funding is available for a suitably qualified, interested student. Please contact Dr. Allen for more details.
The project continues our initial work using replication-deficient adenoviruses to introduce wild-type and mutated angiotensin receptors into the RVLM. We have shown that increased AT1 receptor activity in the RVLM leads to an increase in blood pressure. This appears to be due to an action through astrocytes and we are pursuing this interesting observation further. Another aspect of the project is to examine the response to alteration of angiotensin receptors within neurons of the RVLM. To do this we have made viruses with modified promoters which will allow cell specific expression. Having made these viruses the project now involves examining the cardiovascular response to injection into the RVLM. Further opportunities to develop new viral constructs will be available to a motivated student, thus giving exposure to both physiological and molecular biological techniques in the rapidly emerging field of physiological genomicsClick Here for Postgraduate Program Iinformation.
